editing, leadership, & team building

1. E D I T I N G

I applied to be an editor for Scot Scoop in December 2022. Since then, I have learned a great deal about AP Style, grammar, flow, and other elements that make an article stand out. It has helped me improve my own writing in addition to helping my writers with their articles.

Editing for Scot Scoop has given me valuable skills in communication, leadership, and has given me the opportunity to get to know other student journalists.

Communication

One of the rare instances where my phone addiction comes in handy is communicating with my writers. I always respond with detailed feedback and answers to their questions within a couple of hours of receiving their messages.

When I don't hear back from a writer about their article, I make sure to check in and ask them for updates.

I also let my writers know as soon as their article is published and their rubric is graded.

Giving Feedback

Whenever I am editing and grading my writers' articles, I always point out exactly what I changed and why I did so. I vehemently believe that simply taking points off a section and writing a comment like, "Too many AP Style mistakes" is not at all helpful for the writer.

My goal is to be as transparent as possible with my thought process when I am grading. Having in-depth comments will help my writers know exactly what to improve and how they can do it.
