Opinion: Urbanization’s hidden costs create a need for green spaces

Created using Canva, the infographic on the left was created with the intention of proving the toxicity of urban life. Using information from a research paper published in the National Institutes of Health, I used this infographic to portray facts I did not mention in my article in a visual manner.

The design element above was also created on Canva. This one was made to visually symbolize some of the core benefits of having green spaces in an urban area, as a section of my opinion article argues that cities need more green spaces. I chose to put the statistical information on the pros of green spaces in my writing and highlight the general benefits with a multimedia element.

Article: Ozempic shortage unearths American obesity issue

All three of these infographics were created using Canva and made to provide support to my article on the American obesity epidemic.

I intentionally used the same color scheme for the infographics to create a uniform look across the article, and each one features a different sub-topic of the main point of the article.

Article: Rising inflation worsens the Bay Area hunger crisis

The first infographic I created on Canva for an article, this design element visually lists places people can volunteer to help combat the Bay Area hunger crisis. In addition to general information on different charity organizations, it also has a combination of links, symbols, and quotes.

Feature: Reviving the colors of the ocean

The graphic above was created for my feature article on coral restoration technology. My goal when creating it was to keep it simple but also include shocking statistics, so I decided to only include four different facts largely focused on how coral reefs benefit our economy.

Opinion: Urbanization’s hidden costs create a need for green spaces

Created using Knight Lab Studio's "juxtaposition" tool, this multimedia element was created with the intention of showing the contrast between a night sky in the city and a night sky in the countryside.

Included in my opinion article on the detriments of urbanization, this design element shows the severity of light pollution in cities.

Feature: Reviving the colors of the ocean

Created using Knight Lab Studio's "juxtaposition" tool, this multimedia element was created with the intention of showing the contrast between a bleached coral reef and a healthy one.

Included in my feature article on restoration technology for coral reefs, this design element shows the harmfulness of coral bleaching.

Feature: From humble origins to Nobel acclaim: Kati Karikó’s ascent to scientific stardom

These two interactive Genially graphics were made with the goal of simplifying complicated scientific processes to make my article easier to understand.

The above one highlights how protein synthesis works, and the graphic on the right shows how the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine works.

Article: ‘Ear-resistible’ Year of the Rabbit celebrations promote diversity

Made using Genially, this multimedia element has many interactive features that allow the reader to explore different Lunar New Year Events in the Bay Area.

It was made to encourage residents to attend community heritage festivals.

Article: Redwood City temporarily bans gun shops

This infographic was made to be more interactive than the ones from Canva. By utilizing the "tool-tip" feature on Genially, users can click on the plus sign icons to see more information on gun facts.

The graphic shows the historical, political, and statistical facts about guns in America.

Article: Newly emerging ‘rainbow fentanyl’ targets adolescents

This is the first graphic I made with Genially. The infographic uses a variety of symbols to show facts on the adverse effects of fentanyl.

I also included a quote from someone I interviewed for this article to make it less dry and more personal.
